The Genius of the Scene: A Salon Discussion on the Importance of  NYC Nightlife

With David Hershkovits, Co-Founder of Paper Magazine & Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky)

Thursday, November 7th

7PM Doors · 7:30PM Talk

Join us for a salon discussion about the influence of New York nightlife on art, fashion, and literature from two people who have shaped the discussion, David Hershkovits and Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky).

David Hershkovits, co-founder of the iconic Paper Magazine, is one of New York’s leading visionaries for art, fashion, music and literature. He is currently working on a new book discussing the convergence of Bronx Hip Hop and Downtown post-punk. Along with Afrika Bambaataa, Fred (Fave 5 Freddie) Brathwaite, Futura 2000, Dondi White, Rammellzee, Phase 2 and the Rock Steady Crew Breakers, Hershkovits, on assignment for the New York Daily News Sunday Magazine, rode the bus with the 1982 New York City Rap Tour as it introduced Hip-Hop culture to Paris, London and points in between. Thanks to the Mudd Club, French theory, Blondie, Burroughs, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ann Magnuson, Patti Astor, Charlie Ahearn, Kool Lady Blue, The Roxy and many more the downtown connection was made and the rest is history.

He will be joined to discuss the book as a work in progress by Paul D. Miller aka Dj Spooky who is also working on two new books about art, AI, and the geopolitics of data. Both figures have long been part of New York’s cultural landscape at a foundational level.
